Dr. Melissa (Vessels) McDaniel is the new principal at New Highland Elementary School.

“I'm honored to join the New Highland Elementary community as its new principal,” Dr. McDaniel said.  “My vision is rooted in academic excellence, a joyful and collaborative staff culture and positive behavior fostered through strong relationships. I believe every child can grow and thrive when we work together with shared purpose and heart. I’m excited to lead alongside this incredible team and community.”

Dr. McDaniel, a 1997 graduate of North Hardin High School, most recently worked as an interventionist/curriculum and instructional coach at Lansdowne Elementary School in Lexington, part of Fayette County Public Schools.  She worked with students to improve reading, writing and math skills.

“We’re looking forward to having Dr. McDaniel back in Hardin County,” Hardin County Schools Superintendent Teresa Morgan said. “She is dedicated to student success and has proven that she can help teachers grow professionally.  She has a strong work ethic and will continue the legacy of success at New Highland.”  

She has served in various roles of educational leadership.  She mentored teachers, trained staff and facilitated learning effectiveness programs.  She was a primary grades teacher at Mary Todd Elementary School, Clays Mill Elementary School and Deep Spring Elementary School.

Dr. McDaniel earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree from Georgetown College.  She also earned her principal certification and a Doctor of Philosophy in Organizational Leadership from the University of the Cumberlands. 

She replaces Chalis Packer who retired as the NHES principal at the end of the school year.
